ਕੀਹ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੇ ਮੇਵੇ, ਘਿਉ, ਮਿੱਠਾ ਗੁੜ ਮੈਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਸ ਆਦਿਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਰਤੇ ?
What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?
? ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੇ (ਸੋਹਣੇ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਸੌਖੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਜੇ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣ ਲਈਆਂ ?
What good are clothes, and what good is a soft bed, to enjoy pleasures and sensual delights?
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ) ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਹੋਵੇ,
One who prays for the four cardinal blessings
(ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ।
should commit himself to the service of the Saints.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਖ-ਮਹਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
By His Grace, you dwell in the palace of peace;
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰ ।
meditate forever on Him within your mind.
ਜੋ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਨੌ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ (ਦੇ ਤੱੁਲ) ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ;
The nine treasures are in the Ambrosial Name of God.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
Within the human body is its place of rest.
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ, ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਸ਼ਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਡੁੱਬ ਮਰਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਤੂੰ ਝੱਕਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ) ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਇਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਘਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ?
How can you not die of shame, claiming, "This world is mine"?
(ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ) ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੌਤ ਆਵੇਗੀ, ਤਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਤੇਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇਗੀ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
At the very last moment, nothing is yours. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਡੂੰਘੀਆਂ) ਨੀਹਾਂ ਪੁਟਾ ਪੁਟਾ ਕੇ ਤੰੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਉਸਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ
You lay the foundation and build the walls.
ਪਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਤਾਂ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਸਾਢੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਹੱਥ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ (ਸੌਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਤਨੀ ਕੁ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੱਲਦਾ ਹੈਂ) ।੨।
But in the end, three and a half cubits will be your measured space. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਗਵਾਰ ਜੀਵ!) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ) ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਦੇ ਪਰਛਾਵੇਂ ਹਨ
Power, wealth and youth are all just shadows,
ਜਦੋਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਅਸਲੀ ਥਾਂ (ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ) ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ
as are the vehicles you see moving around.
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! ਘਰ ਮਹਲ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਉਸਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਭੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ।
Fareed, those who built houses, mansions and lofty buildings, are also gone.
ਉਹੋ ਹੀ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਤੋ ਨੇ, ਜੋ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਹ ਨਿਭਿਆ ਤੇ (ਅੰਤ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ) ਕਬਰੀਂ ਜਾ ਪਏ ।੪੬।
They made false deals, and were dropped into their graves. ||46||
ਹੇ ਫਰੀਦ! (ਇਹ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ) ਘਰ ਤੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ (ਹਨ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਇਸ (ਸਿਲਸਿਲੇ) ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਜੋੜ ।
Fareed, houses, mansions and balconies - do not attach your consciousness to these.
(ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਕਬਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਅਤੋਲਵੀਂ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪਏਗੀ ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣੇਗਾ ।੫੭।
When these collapse into heaps of dust, none of them will be your friend. ||57||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ (ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ), ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
The True Name is their merchandise, the True Name is their expenditure; the Love of their Beloved fills their inner beings.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਪਿਆਰ (ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਡਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ) ।
The Messenger of Death does not even approach them; the Creator Lord Himself forgives them.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਧਨਵਾਨ ਹਨ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੰਗਾਲ ਹੈ ।੨੬।
O Nanak, they alone are wealthy, who are imbued with the Naam; the rest of the world is poor. ||26||
